Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
